Hydrosol or flower water and how are they different

Hydrosols are water residues formed during the distillation of plants or flowers. They contain many water-soluble plant components and therefore have a different structure than essential oils. Hydrosols have a plant-like smell, but this smell is softer. Hydrosols contain minerals, cellulose, aromatic compounds, organic acids, water-soluble plant pigments and flavonoids. Hydrosols can be used both on the skin and in therapeutic treatments.

Hydrosols of flower waters can be called flower waters (because that's what they are). However, the word floral water usually refers to water that has been scented with essential oils. The best floral waters are made through a process that breaks down essential oils into tiny particles and forces them to combine with de-ionized water. No chemicals are used in this process and the scent of the flower water is the same as this essential oil. In this form, the smell lasts longer, and flower waters can be used for the same purpose as hydrosols. When buying flower water, you should always check that it does not contain any chemicals or preservatives (potassium sorbate or benzyl alcohol, which are still allowed to be added to natural cosmetics products).

Flower water can be used in many different ways:

  • By sprinkling on the face before moisturizing cream
  • Spraying on the body after sunbathing
  • Using them in place of facial toner for a gentle cleansing and cooling treatment. Floral waters do not contain alcohol and are therefore very mild care products.
  • Can be sprinkled on children to calm them down
  • Cocktails can be added to give it a nice smell
  • A little flower water can be added to your drinking water
  • Can be used in baking sweets and preparing salads

In conclusion, we can say that flower waters are so natural that they can even be eaten and can also be used to freshen or perfume the room air, and they have no harmful effects on the body. Happy experimenting!
