Barberry root (Berberis vulgaris) or common gourd extract is made from the yellow root bark of the barberry plant. It is a gray shrub with spiny branches that can grow up to 2.7 meters tall. It bears yellow flowers in spring and red berries in autumn. Barberry is often found in garden hedges. In the 19th century, New England settlements used this plant as a source of jam and yellow dye.
