"Om" is both a mantra and a mystical sound that is sacred in several religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. The meaning of the syllable "om" in Sanskrit is literally "that which is pronounced aloud" or also "sound" and "to shout", but its original meaning regardless of interpretation is one - "I".
In Hindu belief, at the beginning of the creation [of the world], the divine all-pervading consciousness took an initial form as a vibration, manifesting as the sound "om". Before it was created and manifested, it was just a void, a dormant potential. Thus, the vibration created by saying "omi" symbolizes the manifestation of God, taking shape.
The past, the present, the future and all that exists between the three are concentrated in this sound. It is a reflection of absolute reality that also symbolizes the deeper content of universal creation, including birth, life and death.
