ORGANIC MYRRH

Commiphora myrrha

Botanical Profile

Myrrh is a thorny shrub that can grow up to 3 meters in height and belongs to the Burseraceae family. The myrrh tree is capable of withstanding extreme climatic conditions, such as those found in desert regions. Its sparse leaves grow on thorny, scaly branches. The reddish-orange flowers of the myrrh tree appear in late summer, and "yellow tears"—the precious and legendary myrrh resin—are harvested from its knobby trunk.

Origin and History:

Native to East Africa (Ethiopia, Somalia), Yemen, and Libya, the resin of the myrrh tree has been highly valued since antiquity. The Egyptians used it for embalming the dead, while the Hebrews prized it for its fragrance and perceived psychic effects. The Babylonians used it in the creation of perfumes and beauty ointments. Along with frankincense, myrrh was also offered to the Magi.
