Botanical profile
Black pepper is a plant belonging to the *Piperaceae* family. It is a tropical woody vine—an epiphytic climber—that grows to a height of 8–10 meters. It grows by clinging to a support (such as an upright stem or tree trunk) or by creeping along the ground, rooting at each node along the stem. Its leaves are arranged alternately; they are bright green and spade-shaped. Its spike-like inflorescences contain about fifty tiny hermaphroditic flowers. These develop into small, spherical, fleshy berries that turn red when ripe and contain a single seed. The plant has a lifespan of only about twenty years and can yield 5–6 kg of fruit per year.

Black pepper is traditionally cultivated in Madagascar and along the Malabar Coast; it originates from the foothills of the Himalayas.
