Traditional use and health benefits
Amla is the fruit of Phyllanthus Emblica, a small fruit-bearing tree that is considered sacred in India.
Amla has been used medicinally for thousands of years in the Ayurvedic and Unani systems. Fruits, seeds, leaves, roots, bark and flowers are all used in the traditional system of Indian medicine. According to Ayurveda, Amla balances all three types (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) and contains five of the six flavors recognized by Ayurveda.
In addition to internal health, Amla also has a reputation for reducing hair loss, promoting growth, and enhancing the natural color of hair. In India, amla is also extremely popular as a hair oil and is also used as a paste on the scalp.
Health Effects of Amla.
Digestive health
A healthy digestive system is the cornerstone of vibrant health, and as an extremely fiber-rich fruit, Amla helps this important system in many ways. It promotes healthy bowel movement, keeping the digestive tract clean. Amla also acts as a natural laxative to clear waste from the digestive tract, relieving constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
Amla also strengthens the digestive system, improving the body's ability to absorb nutrients from food. Amla's sour and bitter taste triggers the taste receptors, making the digestive enzymes active, which means more beneficial nutrients are absorbed and ensures the smoothness of the entire digestive process.
Strengthening immunity
A weakened immune system is the root cause of infections and diseases. With antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, amla has a restorative effect on the immune system. Research has shown that Amla berry extract has effective antibacterial activity against diseases caused by bacteria such as staph and cholera. It has even been proven to fight Helicobacter pylori bacteria - one of the main causes of stomach ulcers.
Amla is rich in powerful antioxidants—and extremely rich in vitamin C—nutrients that strengthen the immune system and neutralize free radicals before they can damage vital body functions.
Liver health
Amla has been proven to restore the antioxidant system in the liver and restore normal liver enzyme activity by increasing the production of the main antioxidants glutathione and superoxide dismutase. The importance of the liver in immune system health cannot be overstated - optimal liver function reduces toxic load, which in turn alleviates the burden of chronic toxicity and low-grade inflammation that keeps the immune system from doing its job. Amla supports the immune system to deal with real threats.
Typical use
Amla can be eaten directly as a fruit or made into soup and chutney.
Amla powder can be added to smoothies, encapsulated or mixed with a little water and drunk.
