…Looking back on my more than thirty years of experience as a Vaidya (Vaidya – Ayurvedic doctor, practitioner – see the glossary of terms in the appendix of the book. translator’s note) in the science of Ayurveda, I still doubt the appropriateness of calling Ayurveda the “Indian system of medicine”.
It is clear that it belongs to India, but is it only a “system of medicine”? Over the years, I have come to the conclusion that calling Ayurveda just another “system of medicine” is a rather narrow-minded approach. As the meaning of the word “Ayurveda” is clear, it is a holistic knowledge of life. In my opinion, no health promotion system in existence today achieves the level of understanding of health as defined by the World Health Organization:
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or symptoms.»
Ayurveda not only delivers on this promise of health, but also offers much more. It goes further and offers an even broader understanding of health, where in addition to physical, social and mental health, a person also achieves the dimension of mental health. A good student of Ayurveda is one who is aware of his own personal limitations in understanding this great science and philosophy, which has evolved over centuries through the experiments and intellectual work of the Rishis (thinkers) of India.«…
